This website is an opening stage of a digital archive of life stories of Slovenian emigrants and their descendents. It has been designed to be continuously supplemented by adding new life stories. The stories on this website were prepared by researchers of the Slovenian Migration Institute: Mirjam Milharčič Hladnik, Jernej Mlekuž, Kristina Toplak, Urška Strle. Janja Žitnik Serafin.

The experiences of individuals as historical agents are an increasingly important source for the understanding of social and cultural phenomena. Therefore, this website aims at gathering oral and written testimonies and life stories of Slovenian emigrants and their descendants in an historical and contemporary context.

The creation of this archive was financed by the Slovenian Research Agency and the Slovenian Slovenian Research Agency and the Slovenian Government’s Office for Slovenians Abroad. A digital archive that can develop by encouraging future contributions is one of the goals of the project titled Creation of Memory and Preservation of Cultural Identity among Slovenian Emigrants and Their Descendents, headed by Mirjam Milharčič Hladnik, PhD

As indicated by the variety of forms in which life stories on this website appear, various kinds of materials can be used to present a life story: photographs, letters, audio recordings, videos, spoken or written memoirs, interviews etc. Two of the stories below are presented in English, the rest of them in Slovenian.

Welcome to the archive!
